Highlight

This trip is specially designed for those interested in the American, Australian and Kiwi veterans during the Vietnam war. Although extensively documented by the survivors of Australian’s heavily engagement of the war, little is known of the Viet Cong’s actions. Therefore, we always try to find some of the local Vietnamese veterans who fought in the remarkable of Long Tan. From this trip, you have a chance to visit:
  • Exploration of the Long Tan area, etched in ANZAC history
  • Important war operational sites—Bà Rịa & Hoa Long villages
  • Guide explaining details about battle sites & ANZAC role
  • Chance to pay your respect at the Long Tan Cross Memorial
  • Long Phuoc Tunnels—which acted as secret meeting areas

Itinerary

Day 1.Long Tan Nui Dat Battle Field - Full Day Trip (-/L/-)

Discover why Long Tan is etched in ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) folklore. On August 18, 1966, D Company, 6 RAR—although heavily outnumbered—fought a large Viet Cong assault in a grueling battle. Visit a former base and see the Long Tan Cross, Long Phuoc Tunnels, and Horseshoe Hill.

After pickup at your hotel, head north to Bà Rịa and Hoa Long in the old operational area. In Ba Ria, where the water tower is still intact, visit the orphanage managed by the Australian Vietnam Veterans Reconstruction Group (AVVRG) and learn how the veterans’ organization is involved in constructing a dental facility and upgrading sanitation facilities in Long Tan.

Next, stop at the former site of Australia's Nui Dat Task Force Base (Nui Dat SAS Hill) and listen as your guide explains how the occupation of Nui Dat required removing all inhabitants within 2.5 miles (4 km), therefore forcibly resettling the people of Long Tan and Long Phuoc. Today little remains of the military camp except columns from the main gate and the old helipad is a now soccer field.

Drive by the location of the Fire Support Base known as Horseshoe Hill (access is not permitted due to the presence of land mines) to the Discourtesy Rubber Plantation. Visit the Long Tan Cross Memorial, a focal point for remembrance, and head to the Long Phuoc Tunnels—featuring meeting areas, first aid stations, and fighting pits—before returning to Ho Chi Minh City.
